July News: Only through legislation can we protect ourselves?
Public health is influenced by various factors. Within it, genes are basically unmodifiable, yet we are capable of modifying voluntary and involuntary factors.
Voluntary factor is associated with personal behaviour. Prof. Tian Lin Wei from the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health at the University of Hong Kong said that smokers simply need to quit smoking to safeguard their own health as harmful substances are breathed in during smoking. On the other hand, it is impossible to avoid involuntary factors. For instance, the public is forced to accept environmental tobacco smoke and we cannot block the surrounding air pollutants from penetrating indoors. Additionally, pollutions from regional source and traffic have direct impact on us. Hence, only through legislation and collective efforts to pressurize the government can the problem of public health caused by air pollution be improved.
