Consumer petition sign-up campaign
(1 March 2010, Hong Kong) CAN is launching an unprecedented consumer campaign to fight Hong Kong’s air pollution with the city’s leading restaurants and gyms on 3 March 2010. For six weeks, over 300 restaurants and gyms will conduct a petition drive on behalf of the NGO. At the time of bill presentation (or check-in), customers will be presented with The Petition for Clean Air. Customers can either complete and sign the document on the spot or return the signed form to any participating outlet at their convenience during the month of March. Patrons can request additional forms for dining companions or for taking home to family and friends. The campaign will be announced through public service announcements in Apple Daily, the SCMP, the Financial Times, Time Out and HK Magazine. OpenRice.com will be CAN’s main media partner, alerting their members to the campaign, as well as helping CAN to recruit even more restaurants.
This consumer petition drive is one of the cornerstones of CAN’s anti-pollution campaign, Clean Up the Air One Signature at a Time, devised by CAN’s pro bono ad agency, DDB. The participation of consumer brands is crucial to getting the issue of air pollution on the radar of the Hong Kong people and will accompany public service announcements on TVB, indoor and outdoor posters and billboards throughout The Link shopping centers and MTR stations, and SMS messages from CSL. NO OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS CAMPAIGN has ever approached the scale and diversity of messaging of Clean Up the Air One Signature at a Time.
The idea to sign up customers through restaurants came about when Jai Waney, an owner of zuma and ROKA, met with Joanne Ooi, CEO of Clean Air Network, to brainstorm about how he could get more involved in supporting CAN. He told Ooi, “It’s our responsibility to lead by example on this crucial issue.” Soon after, CAN met with Eugenie Kan, Regional Director of Marketing & Business Development of Pacific Coffee, who was equally enthusiastic and concerned about air pollution: “I don’t see why we can’t get our customers to sign The Petition for Clean Air. After all, it’s an issue which affects everyone in Hong Kong.”
CAN CEO Joanne Ooi said: “It’s really thanks to the leadership and courage of the first few restaurants who volunteered to participate that we decided to go full speed ahead and recruit as many groups as possible. I take my hat off to the industry for being so enthusiastic and civic-minded. Restaurants and gyms are at the front line of consumer messaging, so this is a very important avenue of communication for a campaign such as ours. Air pollution touches everyone, literally, so every customer who receives a petition will immediately understand its importance.”
Clean Air Network (www.hongkongcan.org) educates the public about the health impacts of air pollution and is mobilizing public support for cleaner air in Hong Kong. CAN has more 15,000 members and a strong social media presence, such as a Facebook group of 10,000. Before the end of this year, the Government will revise Hong Kong’s long-outdated air quality management strategy. Therefore, 2010 is a crucial window of time, during which CAN has the opportunity to mobilize grassroots support for clean air in Hong Kong. In addition to its public messaging campaign, CAN is working closely with District Councilors, LegCo members and community, business and student leaders to spread its message through numerous channels, including street discussion forums and educational talks. I go to California Gym 3 to 4 times a week (mainly Causewaybay)
Unfortunately I have not seen any CAN petition flyer at sign-in, at least none came to my awareness.
I will check on Monday if they are really there.
It would be so much more effective if management could instruct personel to hand out the flyers automatically with sign-in (mandatory for every customer with every visit)!
Plastic bags are being given out almost everywhere in HK (exept supermarkets as I know) without asking customers if they want one or not. So why not hand out those petition flyers instead of putting them on the shelve where they are overlooked?
