What did your contribution enable CAN to achieve in the past year?
- Increased youth participation in the air pollution issue
Twenty schools are currently participating in CAN’s student monitoring project or have requested the materials for use in their classrooms. By physically measuring pollutants near their homes and schools, students discover first-hand the levels of air pollution that affect them daily.
- A city-wide petition in support of clean air
In late 2011, CAN conducted a petition-signing campaign, in support of clean air. Within a month, 10,000 signatures were collected and presented to the Government, letting them know that the public recognizes the critical need to improve our city’s air quality and wants the Government to take action.
- Successful advocacy for new, stricter Air Quality Objectives
Throughout 2011, CAN has continued to act as the Government’s “honest mirror,” conducting research and analysis of various policies, such as the Government’s air quality data and annual budget announcement. CAN’s lobbying contributed to the Government’s decision to announce new air quality standards to protect public health.
- The Chief Executive Candidate Environmental Policy Forum
CAN jointly hosted a forum where all three candidates appeared together for the first time to speak about their environmental policy platforms. Albert Ho, CY Leung and Henry Tang attended and participated in a Q & A session with the public about each candidate’s perceptions of Hong Kong’s environmental future.
