New measures to curb air pollution being planned in Guangzhou.

The Guangzhou government plans to copy the number-plate restriction policies the Beijing government used before the 2008 Olympics in order to clear the air for the Asian Games in November 2010.

In addition to restrictions on vehicles (excluding buses and taxis), polluting factories and power plants will be shut down for the games.

Similar traffic restrictions on public vehicles will be introduced by the Guangdong government and city governments in the Pearl River Delta.

“Clean air is the top priority of the whole province this year” says Li Zhuo, director of the Guangzhou Environmental Protection Bureau’s vehicle pollution control department.

The new measures will be in place from November 1 until December 22. However, some measures will continue to be imposed even after the Games.
