Cold comfort

Lots of things can go through your mind if you’re trapped in traffic on an ice-cold bus full of shivering, impatient people. I was in exactly such a situation 12 days ago travelling from Wan Chai to the airport. The E11 bus that I boarded on a warm Thursday evening at around 6.30 was going nowhere. It formed part of a long line of buses that crawled bumper to bumper, resembling the carriages of a stationary train that stretched from Wan Chai to Admiralty. It took my bus 35 minutes just to reach Central.

The outside temperature was a comfortable 21 degrees Celsius or so. It must have been a frigid 15 degrees or less inside. The man behind me had his jacket hood pulled low over his face to keep warm. Another passenger nearby coughed non-stop. Others sat huddled with blank, helpless stares…
