Update on our Campaign

As we near the end of the official public consultation period (30 November), we wanted to update you on our progress.

Two days ago, Tsang Yuk Sing, the chairman of LegCo signed CAN’s Petition for Clean Air — an important show of support, because Tsang is a DAB party member and the former chairman of that party. To create genuine grassroots support, it’s crucial to gain the support of the majority DAB party. To date, 31 District Councillors and 5 LegCo members have signed our petition, representing support for clean air in 15 of 18 districts. We’re continuing to make steady progress by systematically attending EPD briefings, DC meetings and organizing one-on-one appointments with District Councillors.

On Sunday, Friends of the Earth’s Stroller March was not as well attended as we would have liked, because of so much other NGO activity on that day. Please check out these photos taken by William Furniss. Although we are working closely with Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, it doesn’t mean that all the enviro-NGOs are coordinating effectively — yet. We will strive to coordinate and network together more groups in the coming months, to avert the splintering of precious resources. We hope that NGOs will call on us to enlist our aid and function as a communication bridge between different organizations.

That same weekend, we also had a presence at Clockenflap, signing people up on our petition and selling our iconic “Born in Hong Kong” t-shirt. (You can see the t-shirts on the kids pictured in the Stroller March link, above); CIS conducted petition sign-up during its school fair on Saturday; and Joanne Ooi, our CEO, spoke and participated in Blogfest Asia and HK Blogger Con, thanks to the gracious invitation of CAN advisor, internet guru, Charles Mok.

Other News

As of last week, the Government had only received less than 400 responses to its official questionnaire. It’s crucial to increase the number of submissions from the public during the public consultation, so please take the 90 seconds it takes to complete Greenpeace’s online Facebook questionnaire. If you are NOT on Facebook, you can complete the official questionnaire on our website.

CAN’s CEO, Joanne Ooi, just launched CAN’s blog. http://cleanairnetwork.blogspot.com/
The Chinese version will follow shortly and will be penned by CAN Campaign Manager, Sum Yin Kwong. The blog is a personal account of how we’re conducting the campaign, replete with personal observations and analysis.

Civic Exchange is holding a transport conference open to the public on 28 November, Saturday, 9-5, Pacific Place Conference Center. If you’re interested in learning more about roadside emissions, the pollution which harms us most, from experts, please register and attend. The conference is free of charge.

On 24 November, Tuesday, 7-9 pm, Box Thai Restaurant has generously offered to host an educational and networking event for CAN. Please see details here.
