SMS campaign underway

Environmental concern group Clean Air Network (CAN) has joined hands with mobile network operator CSL to send out text messages to call for public support of the green group’s events.
CAN is a recently formed environmental organisation to raise public awareness of the health impacts of air pollution.
The SMS campaign, running in English and Chinese for two weeks, encourages people to sign a CAN petition to urge the government to clean up Hong Kong’s air.
The petition calls air pollution “the most serious public health crisis” in Hong Kong, pointing out that it kills more than 1,100 people every year.
“You can breathe healthy air in HK only 41 days a year,” the text message reads.
“Help us clean up air pollution, one signature at a time.”
CAN chief executive officer Joanne Ooi said: “The timing is crucial as the government is currently reviewing Hong Kong’s long-outdated Air Quality Objectives (AQOs) with a public consultation period which ends on November 30.
“The AQOs have not been revised for more than 20 years, which partially explains why air pollution has become Hong Kong’s biggest public health crisis.” For further details, visit www.hongkongcan.org
